I-Octane say no beef after a sucess Canadian Tour

leave a comment »

The streets are buzzing about a possible beef between young-guns Teflon of the Yard A Love label and former stable mate I-Octane of Arrows Recording. Telflon has recorded a hard-hitting single on Stephen McGregors Daybreak Riddim that attacks powerful forces in the music business who are conspiring against his career. A few lines from the single go:

Hear dem a labba and ah chat
Well, I just low dem with dem mock brain
Mi hear some deejay link up and ah plan up
And ah say who Teflon? And dem stop play me
But memba say ah mi say
Guns rise and not Octane
Weh dem a go wid dem crack brain

Teflon, however, has played down any suggestion of conflict between he and Octane.
“Is not any beef thing, is just a clarification of certain things,” Teflon said. “I was at Arrows and some things go down, and mi lef, me and Octane nuh really have no beef still.” He did not elaborate on the reasons he had left Arrows Recording Co. Ltd.

Mrs. Rose Linton, one of the bigwigs at Arrows Recording, offered a terse ‘no comment’ on the reported beef between her artiste, I-Octane and his former stable mate. Teflon had been a regular at the East Kingston studio for a couple of years because he liked the energy but he had never actually signed to the label.

Teflon recently returned to Jamaica after performing in Toronto, Canada alongside Turbulance and I Wayne. His bookings are handled by Margaret of Scotch Bonnet Productions and Janet of Yard a Love Productions.

The deejay is seeking to release his album, ‘Motherless Child’ soon. In the meantime, his single Bobo Run Out Pon Dem is getting crazy love from FM radio.”Right now, me ah set the ting, Teflon is the i-ver burning fire and I will continue to represent the downtrodden and oppressed youths across the globe

Other sources believe that the friction between the two is based on a conflict of their personalities, and they have not performed their big hit, ‘Guns Rise’ together for over a year.

Dancehall/Reggae Biggest Counterfieter Arrested

with one comment

Following a year-long investigation by the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA), the RCMP has shut down Audiomaxxx.com Ltd., a major alleged music counterfeiting operation in Winnipeg, and filed criminal charges against four individuals.

Raj Singh Ramgotra, the principal behind Audiomaxxx, was among those arrested during the raid yesterday at the organization, it is alleged that over a period of three years Audiomaxx has manufactured and distributed pirated compact discs, hard core pornographic videos, and digital downloads worldwide.

During the raid police seized an enormous volume of suspected counterfeit goods. This includes more than 200,000 music CDs and DVDs, numerous movie DVDs and hundreds of thousands of blank discs. Police also seized five CD/DVD burning towers, each with 12 burners, which together are capable of burning well in excess of 10,000 CDs and DVDs a day. The raid also netted several computers and hard drives, two commercial CD printers, four colour copiers and other office equipment.

More than 10 police officers were involved in yesterday’s raid. “We sincerely thank the RCMP officers who have worked so hard to bring Audiomaxxx to heel, and to the federal prosecutors who have worked closely with them,” said Graham Henderson, President of the Canadian Recording Industry Association. “Today’s arrests send out a clear message that commercial piracy will no longer be tolerated in Canada.”

The operation appears to be highly developed, with a significant catalogue of allegedly pirated CDs and music downloads offered for sale via the website www.audiomaxxx.com, including copies of tracks by famous artists like Shania Twain, Lionel Richie, Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige and Nelly Furtado.

“The RCMP has again demonstrated that it stands side by side with artists and rights holders in the fight against intellectual property crime,” said Randy Lennox, President and CEO of Universal Music Canada Ltd. and Chairman of CRIA. “CRIA has a longstanding partnership with the RCMP and other police forces in fighting piracy, and today we have taken a big step together to stop one of the most flagrant examples of its kind in Canada.”

CRIA began investigating Audiomaxxx as part of an ongoing program to deter music counterfeiting and piracy. The operation came to CRIA’s attention because of the large volume of suspected counterfeit products openly offered for sale on the Internet and the owner’s failure to stop selling these products after the issuance of cease-and-desist orders.

Radio DJ hits out on Mavado

leave a comment »

Kwesi “Hypa Hoppa” Hopkinson of Radioactive and RED 96.7 fame, has called on his peers in the entertainment industry to take a stand against violent music. Artists mentioned in his call include popular dancehall artists Movado and Busy Signal as well as hip hop mogul 50 Cent.

Hopkinson in an interview with the Trinidad Express stated, “There is no doubt that the music is influencing the youths towards violence. Particularly an artiste like Movado who says he’s a gangsta for life and has the youths emulating that lifestyle.” Other individuals do not necessarily hold Hypa Hoppa’s views on the matter while some are in total agreement.

Hopkinson indicated that he has nothing personal against Movado or his music, he is concerned that the youths in Trinidad and Tobago are be adversely affected by the lyrical content along with the image that certain artists in the music industry are promoting. One person dstated that he was absolutely disgusted to know that at 7am while in a maxi(shuttle taxi), that young students were bombarded with lyrics talking about shooting and murder. In his opinion it does not set the right example for the future of the nation.

Other people and even some Dancehall artistes such as express by Vybz Kartel during his recent interview on TVJ’s Impact seem to think that the responsibility lies at home squarely on the parents shoulders. As he was younger he also listened to very violent lyrics and music, however due to his parenting, he knew that was where the violence stops, with the end of the song.

Hypa Hoppa also said, “We need to understand what Movado is doing to the youths when he says he’s a gangsta for life. We have to take a stand against the music that’s inflaming these young minds, because they are not strong enough to withstand these messages.”

He continued to say that in his Afternoon Drive programme that no violent music will be played and is also urging other radio personalities to follow suit and set an example. Hopkinson is not calling for a ban against the music, but an exercise of caution when playing music on the national airwaves. Will Jamaican Radio DJs take such a stance? Do you think violence music contribute to violent crimes?

MAVADO HEADLINES " SOUL REBELLION" 2008

leave a comment »

…ANY WAYYYYYYYYY…

David “Mavado” Brooks will be setting his sights on doing good when he headlines the 2008 Soul Rebellion event on March 11th in Negril, Jamaica. The recent success of his debut album “Gangsta For Life: The Symphony of David Brooks” back in 2007 (VP Records), Mavado has since shared the fruits of his labour within his community by launching his “Connect Jamaica” charity, where he donates computers to local schools.

This made him the perfect candidate for the face of Soul Rebellion – the festival with a cause, where proceeds from each fund raising event are invested back into the local economy in Jamaica. By targeting the spring break crowd, Soul Rebellion hosts a number of unique events and concerts that are geared towards raising funds to help rebuild local schools and strengthen local communities, long after the tourists depart.

Through the “Buy-A-Brick” program, Soul Rebellion works with the Negril Education Environment Trust (NEET) to restore local schools. Spring breakers can buy a brick and decorate it with their names or Greek letters, and those bricks are then used to rebuild schools, thereby creating a positive change in the social and economic landscape of the tourist destination.

Soul Rebellion 2008 occurs every Tuesday during the month of March at the Jungle Nightclub in Negril, with daytime activities happening at Travellers Beach Resort…

Common Reveals New Album

leave a comment »

Common has been active in the studio working to release his next album, “The Believer” by November of this year. In a recent interview with MTV News, he stated, “I’m just getting in the mode. I been touring a lot and been working on verses here and there. Now, I’m starting to get focused on the album, letting it take its shape. And at the same time [I'll] be working on films, God willing.”

Common appears in this spring’s “Street Kings” with Keanu Reeves and Game, and in “Wanted” with Angelina Jolie, which should be hitting theaters June 27. He’s also patiently waiting for his turn as the Green Lantern, if the “Justice League” movie will get back on track after being shelved during the writers’ strike.

Common is also working on new material that he’s collaborating with Q-Tip on. “Q-Tip and I been planning the Standard album,” he said, referring to the duo the pair have formed. “We been conceptualizing, but we just gotta continue to work on it. We will. I look at it like two jazz musicians getting together, the way Charlie Parker and cats would get together and do work. I feel a lot more free with my music now that I’m doing films and stuff, because I don’t put as much pressure on the music. It ain’t my only source of income and way to make a living.

Rapper T.I talks about "Life on House Arrest" and The American Gangsta

leave a comment »

While on house arrest rapper T.I. called up Vibe recently to provide a brief update on future events, American Ganster and his thoughts on being an actor. Read a snippet of the interview after the cut.

VIBE: How do you feel about the reception American Gangster got?

TI: Man, I think that it was definitely a phenomenal experience. I’m proud of the film. It was definitely a learning experience that I took away from it. It got me a lot of respect as an actor and it kind of overrode all of the doubt that comes with hiring a rap artist as an actor in a major motion picture. Most of the time when people consider casting rappers as actors, it’s not in a movie of this magnitude. You know, it’s very few of us that can really be taken seriously in a movie like American Gangster. I’m proud to be one of them.

I’m still doing better than those suckers… You ain’t got to worry about me. God don’t give you more than you can handle.
Did you enjoy the film?

Absolutely! Absolutely!

Did you feel like you were breaking ground?

I mean, I thought I was part of a film that was breaking ground. It definitely wasn’t all about me. I was a piece of a groundbreaking ensemble. It wasn’t like it was my movie and my movie alone, you know what I’m saying?

You sure? That’s what I thought it was. (Laughs) Nah, just kidding.

(Laughs) It was definitely Denzel and Russell’s movie. I was fortunate enough to be involved and to work with the likes of Ridley Scott, you know what I’m saying. That was just a blessing in itself.

What were some of the significant differences in terms of working on American Gangster as opposed to ATL?

[For] one ATL kind of revolved around my character. American Gangster accented around my character. I think that it’s very important as an actor to do both. It’s important to show people that you can carry a movie and it’s important to show people that you can come in and spice up a movie no matter how big it is, no matter whom else is in it to show that intimidation isn’t a factor, and that the size of the role isn’t a factor, that you can still come in and do your thing.

What did you learn from doing American Gangster?

[That] Ridley [Scott] is one of the coolest cats you could ever meet. A person of his accomplishments, you’d expect a totally different man then what you get. Like when you meet him and he’s so cool, and he’s got on a hoody and some cargo pants and he’s just chilling. It’s kind of like, “Damn, I wasn’t really expecting this.” And how much humility he has and how much time he takes to actually convey what he wants to see on screen. You know, most people wouldn’t be bothered. People with half his accomplishments or a fraction of his accomplishments wouldn’t be bothered as much. So I was really impressed by that. I was real impressed by how efficient he was. It was times we had five or ten minutes to get a shot done and people was saying “Aight well, I know we ain’t gonna get this shot” and he’s like, “Nah, let’s go!” And he’d walk on set and he’d say, “Well your character’s gone do this, this, this and this and he’s feeling like this, this, this and this, ba da boom ba da bing, ACTION! Cut! GO!” It was just like working with the ultimate professional. It was definitely an experience.

Deva Bratt "Life Behind Bars" (audio inside)

with 2 comments

It seem like Deva Bratt may not be back on the streets until March 27th. Sheldon ‘Deva Bratt’ Smith was remanded when he appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, to answer to rape charges. It is beleive that bail was denied due to the second charge of carnal abuse that he was charged with.

Allegations against Deva Bratt are that on February 4, he sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl, after dragged her into a house. The child went to school and related her ordeal to the school’s guidance counsellor who sent her for medical attention after which the police was brought in. An investigation led to the arrest of the entertainer, who was charged with rape.

Deva Bratt as another charge of carnal abuse against him, also involving a 14-year-old girl. When he appeared in court, he was represented by attorney-at-law, Peter Champagnie.

Deva Bratt recently inched up to #17 on the HYPE TV chart with his first real hit, Gussie Clarke on the Truckback Records label. Will Munga Attack Deva Brat While in Prison ?

leave a comment »

Over the past few months there has been an ongoing lyrical confrontation between the Gangsta Ras, Munga and Portmore Empire’s first lieutenant Deva Brat. The feud got so intense at one point it even escalated into and all out fist fight at Stone Love’s 35th Anniversary. The fracas almost turn fatal when a knife was pulled by Munga who was eventually restrained before both men were removed from the stage.

Now that the new year is in full swing it seems there is no sign of a truce in sight as just recently both entertainers took a swipe at each other on the Night Creature Riddim with Munga accusing Deva of living in a ‘lue’ (a popular Dancehall slang used to denote someone living a fictitious lifestyle) and Deva without skipping a beat returned the favour and said Munga a cuss because he knows he going to bite the dust (afraid of being defeated in the lyrical battle, hence his reason for all the arguments).

However, though the accusations by both men may not necessarily be true, the new year as also brought some misfortunes for Deva, who is presently incarcerated in the island ’s lock up pending a second date for his hearing regarding his alleged involvement in the carnal abuse of a 14 year old girl in Portmore, St. Catherine.

Now the question begs with Deva one strike down will the Gangsta Ras cease the opportunity to take another swipe at him on wax.

Rihanna Walks In On Her Dad Smoking Crack

with one comment

Superstar Rihanna’s dad told last night of his shame after she caught him smoking crack cocaine when she was just nine years old.

Ronald Fenty revealed how the singer – who hopes to win best international female artist at Wednesday’s glitzy Brits awards do in London – watched him indulge his lethal habit as she peered through a gap in the kitchen door.

Ronald revealed: “I turned and looked Rihanna in the eye and instantly came back down from the high I was on. I saw her run for her mother, ask her something and then they both started to cry. I had no idea she had been watching.

“It was the lowest point – life just stopped and I realised what a fool I had been.”

The moment tore apart Ronald and Rihanna’s lives. He was thrown out of the family home in Barbados and stopped from seeing his daughter. But Ronald, 54, managed to kick the drugs and now plays a full part in her life – even joining the 19-year-old sensation on tour. He has also done his best to warn her off drugs – though he’s sure she wouldn’t touch them anyway.

“I spent 25 years doing drugs so I know the devastation they cause,” he said. “Last year I sat her down and said, ‘Rihanna don’t make the mistakes I did. Don’t do drugs’.

“You see so many young people find fame then lose their heads. I begged her not to do a Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan. She looked me in the eyes and said, ‘Dad don’t be stupid’. She won’t go down the path I went down. She’s too smart.”
