…”EVEN IF THEM KILL MI MAMA DON’T CRY MI A PREPARE FI MI ENEMY”…

News reports has revealed Deejay Mavado was arrested and charged last night with two counts of shooting with intent and one count of illegal possession of firearm in relation to a shooting incident in July last year. The deejay will appear in Gun Court tomorrow.

“The Major Investigation Task Force arrested him last night. He has been arrested in relation to a shooting incident occuring last year, he has been charged for two counts of shooting with intent, and one count illegal possession of firearm, he is booked to appear in court on Friday,” an officer at the Constabulary Communication Network told revealed this morning. According to the police, Mavado turned himself in.

This is not the first that Mavado has had a run in with the police. During September 2006, the police said they received a report that on September 23 of that year Mavado and a group of men had an altercation with another man during a dance on Mannings Hill Road. The man was alleged to have been attacked and injured. The police then went to Cassava Piece, and were in the process of arresting Mavado on a charge of assault occasioning bodily harm, when they were blocked by residents. Later, after the deejay turned himself in, Mavado and a policeman at the station clashed resulting in the deejay incurring a second charge of resisting arrest. During the brawl, the deejay almost lost his fingers when three of his fingers were partially severed and subsequently re-attached by a doctor. He had allegedly been pushed through a glass window by the policeman.

The artist is a member of the Bounty Killer-led Alliance, and is not the first Alliance member to be arrested on gun charges. Last year Alliance selector Foota Hype was arrested charged with illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.

Dancehall Producer Don Corleon Featured on CW Series Girlicious

leave a comment »

Platinum producer extraordinaire Don Corleon is back in the limelight, as the featured guest musician in the hit American television series, Girlicious.

Donovan Bennett, known to the masses as Don Corleon, has been putting his indelible signature on the top sounds emanating from Jamaica to the world, and is best known for crafting chart-topping tunes for dancehall icons Sean Paul and Elephant Man, but that’s just the beginning of his realm. He’s produced Billboard hits for pop princess Rihanna, and talented R&B mainstay Keyshia Cole, who regularly treks to Kingston, Jamaica to work with Don in his Vendetta Studios.

In fact, Don reveals the track featured on Girlicious was first composed for Cole. “I made it for Keyshia’s last album but it didn’t make it, but Ron Fair at Geffen Records loved the track and wanted to save it for something good. So I got the call and went to L.A. (Los Angeles) last year and we did the show.

The featured song on tonight’s episode of Girlicious is titled “Leave You Alone,” with music by Don Corleon and lyrics by Pressure, who just saw the release of his second album, Love & Affection, on the Don Corleon Records label.

The Corleon track was used as the centerpiece in a vocal expression challenge for the girls, who are competing to become the next Pussycat Dolls, a female burlesque singing act that eventually landed a record deal, which made them and their lead singer Nicole Scherzinger household names.

Click here to view the clip as Nicole joins Don Corleon in the Geffen Records studio to teach the girls, and the millions who tune in tonight, how music is properly done.

Busta Rhymes sentenced to 3 yrs in NYC

with one comment

Busta Rhymes has been sentenced for assaulting his former driver and a fan after pleading guilty in a deal that puts him on probation for three years and requires him to do 10 days of community service.

The 35-year-old rapper also was fined $1,250, plus court costs, for driving while intoxicated and with a suspended license, and must enroll in a drunken driving program.

Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Larry Stephen warned Rhymes on Tuesday: “If you mess up, you’re going to jail.” Rhymes, whose real name is Trevor Smith, said outside court, “I thank the judge for giving me a chance and I thank everybody for being supportive.”

Rhymes pleaded guilty in January, on the day he was to go to trial.

Why Mavado wrote "On the Rock"

with one comment

No tune has loomed over 2008 for me more than Mavado’s “On the Rock” on Baby G’s “Mission” Rhythm. Now, three months in I’m hardly breaking news on how big this tune is: the tune’s just so incredible I feel the need to publicly declare my total infatuation.

“On the Rock” has many of those qualities and more, and I guess it’s symbolic of a craving I have for more vocal, emotive, colourful music right now.

The backstory to “On the Rock” is that Mavado’s birthday party last year got raided by the Jamaican police and soldiers in helicopters. Angry, he turned to gospel to express his frustration. The result is something even the addition of Jay-Z bars can’t improve.

Call it twilight, magical balance or dynamic tension, I’ve been drawn to Mavado since I first heard ”Amazing Grace” last year. What’s so remarkable about him is the sweetness of his voice and the bitterness of his message. No one else could sing about “[bone] marrow flying” and make it sound so intense.

While I haven’t felt this strong about a dancehall voice since Sizzla’s, in part Mavado reminds me of arguably my favourite house album, Romanthony’s “Romanworld”. Roman too sings with the anguish of someone who the whole world has forsaken, especially on “The Wanderer,” which like “On the Rock” is most spine-tingling when it’s a naked accappella.

Mavado too sounds scorned and forsaken, ripping his heart out and showing it to the world:

leave a comment »

Rapper Juelz Santana is expected to appear in municipal court in New Jersey on Wednesday after police pulled him over for driving with a suspended license and found marijuana and hollow-point bullets in his Bentley, the Daily News has learned.

Santana, 26, whose real name is LaRon James, was arrested last week as he approached the entrance of his home in the gated Glenpointe community in Teaneck.
“This is bull—-,” Santana yelled when pulled over, Officer John Abraham said.

Abraham said he smelled marijuana and saw a green leafy substance on the center console as well as marijuana roaches and Dutch Master and White Owl cigars used to make blunts. Santana, who was born in Harlem, also had a hand-rolled cigar laced with marijuana in his shoe, cops said.

In the trunk, police said they found 29 hollow-point bullets wrapped in a sock and $19,500 rolled in small bundles and hidden in a plastic bag filled with “hundreds of Jolly Rancher” candies. Police also found a plastic sandwich bag of marijuana in the backseat of the cruiser, where Santana had been sitting after he was arrested.

Feds Lock Down Reggae/Dance label John Shop Records

with one comment

Eight Bronx men connected to John Shop Records, a studio and reggae record label launched with drug money, were convicted by a federal jury on Monday (March 3) after being accused of selling as much as $1 million worth of weed every week.

The gang, known as the John Shop Crew, reportedly flew 2,000 pounds of pot a week from California to New York where they sold the weed to lower-level drug dealers, during the years of 1997 to 2004.

Anthony Patterson, 37, was the crew’s leader is alleged to have supervised the transports and sent money back to buy more drugs.Patterson and four others were convicted on drug and gun charges. They’re all looking at a maximum of life in prison.Three others pleaded guilty and face 25 years in jail.

It is reported that the gang used the money from their marijuana sales to fund John Shop Records, a reggae record label that featured artists such as Sizzla and Wyclef John.

The story of John Shop Records according to it’s myspace page indicated that the company started in a basement, with a few guys playing around on a keyboard and a drum machine. Till one day another producer by the name of Ricky came in and did a full sweep of setting up the shop. By this time a lot of hype or buzz was going around the Bronx of this music base.

Attracting some of Reggae’s best -Tony Kelly and John Forte to name a few recorded and produced music with them too. It was a vibe everybody felt once you were around it. It drew you in like a magnet it was just hot! This place was set up to hopefully record any artist best hit. It was in 2002 two brothers made it official. Working with talents such as Yami Bolo, Sizzla, Bounty Killer, Buju Banton, Future Troubles, Major Damage, Zumjay and the list goes on and the rest is history.

ELEPHANT MAN reveals the details of his relationship with P. Diddy

leave a comment »

…”We did exclusive recordings with man like Young Jock, Assassin, Shaggy and Chris Brown; and we got the ladies dem too like Rihanna, Mya and Kat DeLuna.”…

Elephant Man speaks of his career and his latest project Let’s Get Physical – his first album on P Diddy’s Bad Boy label slated for an April 13 release. Elephant man also explain why he is currently not on the local scene in recent times “You can’t allow yuhself fi get burn out, and I was busy, really busy with the album.” By “busy”, he means spending weeks in New York’s mixing labs alongside Diddy and a host of other artistes, “trying to bang out the right sound”.

“The right sound,” he says comes from the impressive producing line- up which, of course, includes Diddy, Swizz Beatz, Baby G and Wyclef Jean, to name a few.

“This album to me is going to be one of my best,” Ele says. “We did exclusive recordings with man like Young Jock, Assassin, Shaggy and Chris Brown; and we got the ladies dem too like Rihanna, Mya and Kat DeLuna.”

Ele also explains the reason for the star-studded collabos: “We wanted to keep the dancehall vibe but we’re trying to please a lot of the other markets, so we give everybody a lickle ting.” Ele shares, too, that, the decision to name his album Let’s Get Physical saying “Yow, we have song fi you and yuh girl, let’s make love get physical. Up inna de club joints, you an’ yuh fren dem a dance, physical; you an’ some breddren out fi jump off, a physical ting.”

Still, he outlines that the album has hardcore dancehall vibes like the Dutty Fridayz staples Drop Dead and Gully Creeper. The 300-pound women waiting to be lifted, the ‘Darth Vader’ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ outfits might be missing, but Ele is just as entertaining as he would be onstage.

Elephant went on to describe the relationship he has with Puffy as “Him just flex ’round we, ’cause him know Jamaicans no ‘frighten’. Him professional man, if him no like a song, him a go mek you know. Him never show me no bad vibes yet.” Ironically, rumours of an Ele vs Diddy ‘beatdown’ surfaced around November, the initial release month of Physical.

“Nutt’n no go so,” says a slightly irate Elephant Man, “after me an no coke head or out a me mind fi know seh di man sign me an’ me go dis him dem way deh.” No love lost, Ele shares that his latest single Five-O featuring Wyclef Jean has hit the airwaves, after that Feel The Steam featuring of-the-moment R&B obsession Chris Brown – the two performed the track two weekends ago at the Smile Jamaica Africa Unite concert.

“Puffy want drop me an Chris Brown inna summer because it a seh ‘can you feel the steam’ and yuh done know summer ago hot an’ a that de lickle girls them want hear. Him (Diddy) know how fi market yuh ting.” But clearly Diddy is better at marketing than he is about expediting paperwork.

“The reason the album take so long a jus’ because we couldn’t move until we get clearance (from the various artistes management companies) to use the song dem. Because we no want a song out a road a play an’ a man a sue we because we no go ’bout it the right and proper way!”
